Fairer Tales

Early financial lessons to help your children unlock their dreams

It's never too early to start building your child’s financial confidence. That's why HSBC has collaborated with the award-winning British children’s author Emma Dodd to create Fairer Tales.

Fairer Tales puts a new twist on a selection of classic fairy tales, featuring determined, modern princesses working hard to achieve their financial goals – without relying on Prince Charming to save them.

Now we’re bringing these stories to Bermuda, as part of our new community-driven campaign to help lay the foundations for our country's future leaders.

Cinderella

Cinderella's dream of designing beautiful sports shoes becomes a reality when the Fairy Godmother gives her a sewing machine. With her creativity and business brilliance, Cinderella opens her own shoe company 'Glass Slipper Sports'.

Sleeping beauty

Sleeping Beauty doesn't need to wait for Prince Charming's kiss to live happily ever after. Instead, she deposits her pocket money into a bank and waits for her savings to grow, so she can do whatever she wants.

Rapunzel

After escaping from the tower on her own, Rapunzel borrows some money from the bank and converts the dark, uncomfortable tower into a beautiful homestay, kick-starting her new rental business!

Once they all make their dreams come true, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel decide to start a special club called the Fairy Godmothers to help other clever young people with brilliant ideas to realise their dreams.

Community outreach

Gender stereotyping in the stories we tell children plays a critical role in shaping attitudes and behaviors. As a part of our Fairer Tales campaign, we will be reaching out to the community to start open and honest conversations about money and gender barriers. We believe that this will help children to feel empowered and well prepared to take control of their own future when they grow up, no matter their gender.

We have partnered with two local charities; Women’s Resource Centre and the Coalition for the Protection of Children to hold events throughout the local community, featuring live readings and free copies of the book.

As a part of this, we are inviting women facing life's challenges and their children to a special 'Mommy and Me' reading. In association with the Coalition for the Protection of Children, we will be visiting local primary schools and reading the Fairer Tales to Primary Three girls.

Reading guide

Our research shows that almost a quarter of parents say they find it difficult to talk to their children about money. Use our handy reading guide to help start a conversation using Fairer Tales as inspiration.
